Biographical Note 

Arthur Edward Winter was born Arthur Edward Stanbridge on the 1st February 1885 at Worth, Sussex, England and died on the 23rd April 1972 at Booker Bay, New South Wales, Australia.  He served in the British Royal Navy from 28th January 1903 until 8th January 1910, on various ships and shore establishments as a Signalman.  He immigrated to Australia and married Alice Nora Tattersal on the 24th June 1912 at Leichhardt, Sydney. Prior to the war, he was employed in various jobs including as a butcher and owner of a number of fish and chip shops in Sydney, which were sold when he enlisted.

He enlisted in the Australian Infantry Forces on the 4th January 1916, embarked from Sydney on HMAT A44 Vestalia on 11th July 1916, and served as a sapper with Divisional Signal Company 1, Reinforcement 19.  He proceeded overseas to France via Folkestone on 5th January 1917, and was taken on strength with the 2nd Divisional Signal Company on the 15th April 1917.  He served as a sapper on the Western Front where he was gassed.  He was admitted to Croydon War Hospital on 20th January 1918, whilst on furlough staying with his mother in Horley, Surrey, U.K.; transferred to the 3rd Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford on 1st March 1918; discharged to No 2 Command Depot, Weymouth on 14th March 1918.  He returned to Australia from England on HMAT A37 Barambah on the 4th August 1918 suffering with pneumonia and chronic bronchitis.  He was discharged from the Army on the 15th August 1919, for medical reasons.  He was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

After leaving the Army, Winter and his wife moved to Booker Bay, New South Wales and established a greengrocer's shop next to their home.  He was a founding and very active member of many organisations within the local community; was a keen amateur radio operator before qualifying as a radio engineer; was a volunteer coast watcher during World War II and also taught semaphore at Ettalong and Woy Woy schools; he also published three editions of Teaching your budgerigar to talk.
