Project Description

Most approaches to multi-project scheduling are based on the assumption that resources can be transferred between projects without any expense in time and cost. Moreover, whoever considered resource transfer times as a decision parameter, they mostly assumed those transfer times as discrete rather than stochastic or uncertain. As this assumption often is not realistic, at first, the Resource Portfolio Problem (RPP) needs to be generalised by additionally including fluctuated resource transfer times and cost. To integrate this aspect, in a first step, a framework needs to be developed after considering fluctuated resource transfers in single- and multi-project environments. It includes managerial approaches to handle uncertain resource transfers, a classification of resource transfer types and new roles that resources can take in these transfers. Moreover, there has been an increasing pressure on manufacturing industries to reduce resource consumption, particularly during setup operations. Under real time context, resource consumption during setup operation can be fluctuated or varied, which may hamper or delay project completion time. Hence, in this study, a new variant needs to be proposed for the multi-project scheduling problem called RPP/fpRC. Later part of this research work will include the solution methodologies of those settings by using heuristic or meta-heuristic approaches. Computational experiments will compare the presented managerial approaches and prove the necessity of explicitly considering fluctuated transfer times in project scheduling already during the planning phase.
